From the beauty of the changing leaves to the typically warm days and cool nights, there is much to love about the Fall in Colorado. For many, Fall means the start of a new school year. Perhaps the enjoyment of a Broncos Sunday? Here at the Newman Center, Fall is the start of a new season of performing arts. Our Fall has already included a breathtaking performance by aerial dance ensemble BANDALOOP, which many of you enjoyed on a beautiful, sunny day September 29.
Our Education initiatives are in full swing with early season highlights including a performance and Q&A with Orquesta Akokán at East High School, where this Cuban mambo jazz ensemble had students on their feet dancing. Just a few days later, world-renowned composer and conductor Eric Whitacre worked with 1,200 high school students over two days of music making at the Newman Center.
The Newman Center Presents series in October brings some fantastic performances to the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall including Pilobolus, Capitol Comedy, Lila Downs, and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh.
Pilobolus (October 14-15) is part of our Dance Series, with their ‘BIG FIVE-OH!’ performance celebrating the esteemed dance company’s 50th anniversary. We are thrilled to welcome them back to the Newman Center. For those who need a good chuckle (and who doesn’t?), join us for Capitol Comedy (formerly known as Capitol Steps) on October 17. This comedy troupe’s winning formula of musical comedy and political satire engages audiences with their hilarious, insightful and non-partisan performances. Critics and audience members alike are raving about Capitol Comedy: “…the sharpest current events lyrics since Tom Lehrer… the jokes are likely to stick in the throats of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike.”
As many of you know, this season is the Newman Center’s 20th anniversary season. One of the highlights from that first year of performances was a Mexican folk/pop singer by the name of Lila Downs. On October 28, Lila returns to the Newman Center with her eclectic mix of music along with a performance style that is uniquely hers. Her incredible stage presence and emotional storytelling through song, truly transcends all language barriers. If you’re not super familiar with Lila’s music, trust us and take a chance on this amazing talent. You’re going to be blown away by this Grammy winning singer.
We kick off November with the arrival of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh fresh from off-Broadway. The Newman Center will become transformed to the Hundred Acre Wood in this new musical stage adaption of everyone’s favorite bear. Featuring the Sherman Brothers’ classic Grammy Award-winning music with further songs by A.A. Milne, this beautiful fresh stage adaptation is told with stunning life-sized puppetry and will be a treat for the whole family.
Our 20th anniversary season is off to a great start, with much to look forward to in October and November. Please take a look at our event calendar and we look forward to seeing you at a future show.
