New York’s electric chamber ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars make their debut in Denver (yes, first time ever!) with a high-octane concert at the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver. The program, titled Big Space after the work to be performed by Michael Gordon, continues Bang on a Can’s 30th anniversary year tour that began in 2017 and features core works written for the ensemble by Bang on a Can cofounding composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, New York legendary composers Philip Glass and Ornette Coleman, and the late-great British composer Steve Martland. The program takes its name from Michael Gordon’s new immersive sonic experience—Big Space—calling upon 24 local musicians from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music to perform with Bang on a Can All-Stars in a “surround sound” live performance. The New Yorker reports, “the composers at the heart of Bang on a Can have sustained what may be the most convivial vanguard in modern music history.
