“Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit, this Charleston, South Carolina-based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture from the southeastern US. “Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” From heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies to playful, ecstatic shouts, these musical roots are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists have grown.
“Full of meditative grace, sharp, cut-crystal physicality and languid dignity.” — The Washington Post
