The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver has announced the 2022-2023 Newman Center Presents series to launch in September. The upcoming season marks the 20th anniversary of the Newman Center. Having hosted thousands of performances by Newman Center Presents, the Lamont School of Music, the DU Theatre Department and hundreds of local and national organizations, the Newman Center has become a crucial addition to the Denver performing arts scene. The Newman Center Presents series showcases renowned artists from around the world.

Subscription packages are on sale now at newmancenterpresents.com or by phone at 303.871.7720. Tickets to individual shows will go on sale Friday, June 17 at 10am.

This season, six subscription packages are available (Dance, Jazz, Classical, National Geographic Live, Director’s Choice 5 and Director’s Choice 9).

The Dance Series consists of three performances. Subscriptions start at $78 (plus service fees).

  • Pilobolus – October 14 & 15 7:30pm – Celebrating 50 years of rebellious dance, Pilobolus tests the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and power of connected bodies.
  • A.I.M by Kyle Abraham – January 27 7:30pm – A contemporary dance company galvanized by Black culture and history, presenting their full-length work “An Untitled Love,” set to the music of D’Angelo.
  • Paul Taylor Dance Company – March 27 7:30pm – One of the foremost modern dance companies ever to exist featuring their signature work “Esplanade” and Larry Keigwin’s “Rush Hour.”

The Jazz Series consists of four performances. Subscriptions start at $76 (plus service fees).

  • Orquesta Akokán – October 3 7:30pm – The golden sound of Cuban mambo polished to a luminous, contemporary sheen.
  • Kenny Barron Trio – February 2 7:30pm – Having collaborated with such artists as Stan Getz and Yusef Lateef, the 11-time Grammy nominated Kenny Barron has been leading bands of his own for over 40 years.
  • Mingus Big Band – April 6 7:30pm – Celebrate the centennial of composer/bassist Charles Mingus’s birth with the six-time Grammy-nominated Mingus Big Band featuring 14 musicians.
  • Cyrille Aimée – May 19 7:30pm – A master of vocal improvisation and a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” according to The New York Times.

The Classical Series consists of four performances. Subscriptions start at $102 (plus service fees).

  • Eric Whitacre with Kantorei and Lamont Symphony Orchestra Strings – October 8 7:30pm / October 9 2pm – One of today’s most programmed composers, Eric Whitacre conducts Denver’s own Kantorei, one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles, along with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra Strings in a performance of “The Sacred Veil.” Co-presented by Kantorei.
  • The Philip Glass Ensemble – February 9 7:30pm – Performing Philip Glass’s “Music in Eight Parts” from 1970 that was thought to be lost, along with selections from “Glassworks,” “The Photographer,” and “Einstein on the Beach.”
  • Michelle DeYoung – March 30 7:30pm – Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung is joined by pianist Cody Guy Garrison for a vocal recital including the work of Korngold. Co-presented by Opera Colorado.
  • Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti and Argus Quartet  – April 2 2pm – Commissioned by the Newman Center, Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti and Argus Quartet present “Ahupua’a,” a string quartet that addresses the Hawaiian concept of land division centered around community need.

The National Geographic Live Series consists of three speakers. Co-presented by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, subscriptions start at $87 (plus service fees).

  • Greenwood: A Century of Resilience with Alicia Odewale – March 20 7:30pm – Uncover stories of resilience in the hundred years since the attack on Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s vibrant Greenwood district. Odewale uses archeology as a tool for reclaiming a narrative and pursuing restorative justice.
  • The Secret Life of Bears with Rae Wynn-Grant – April 27 7:30pm – Dr. Wynn-Grant has dedicated her life to protecting and restoring wildlife populations including black and grizzly bears. Explore how bears and humans can coexist peacefully.
  • Life on the Vertical with Mark Synnott – May 15 7:30pm – Big wall rock climber Mark Synnott uses his skills to break scientific ground, reaching incredibly inaccessible environments in search of rare species.

The Director’s Choice Five Series consists of five curated shows from our Newman Center Presents season. Subscriptions start at $122 (plus service fees).

  • Lila Downs – October 28 7:30pm – A six-time Latin Grammy winner, Lila Downs brings her eclectic mix of Mexican pop, folk, and indigenous roots music to the Newman Center.
  • Damien Sneed – December 1 7:30pm – “Joy to the World: A Christmas Musical Journey” takes the listener through Damien Sneed’s original arrangements of gospel, jazz and classical favorites that will uplift and inspire.
  • A.I.M by Kyle Abraham – January 27 7:30pm – A contemporary dance company galvanized by Black culture and history, presenting their full-length work “An Untitled Love,” set to the music of D’Angelo.
  • Kodo – February 18 7:30pm & February 19 2pm – KODO brings their “visual sound” and taiko drums to the Newman Center for two “must feel” performances.
  • Mingus Big Band – April 6 – 7:30pm – Celebrate the centennial of composer/bassist Charles Mingus’s birth with the six-time Grammy-nominated Mingus Big Band featuring 14 musicians.

The Director’s Choice Nine Series consists of nine curated shows from our Newman Center Presents season. Subscriptions start at $203 (plus service fees).

  • Kenny Barron Trio – February 2 7:30pm – Having collaborated with such artists as Stan Getz and Yusef Lateef, the 11-time Grammy nominated Kenny Barron has been leading bands of his own for over 40 years.
  • Kodo – February 18 7:30pm & February 19 2pm – KODO brings their “visual sound” and taiko drums to the Newman Center for two “must feel” performances.
  • Paul Taylor Dance Company – March 27 7:30pm – One of the foremost modern dance companies ever to exist featuring their signature work “Esplanade” and Larry Keigwin’s “Rush Hour.”
  • Mingus Big Band – April 6 7:30pm – Celebrate the centennial of composer/bassist Charles Mingus’s birth with the six-time Grammy-nominated Mingus Big Band featuring 14 musicians.

In addition, there are multiple Special Events on the Newman Center Presents calendar that are not a part of a subscription series. These performances will go on-sale Friday, June 17at 10am.

  • BANDALOOP – September 29 4:30pm – FREE EVENT (no ticket necessary)            BANDALOOP brings their vertical performance to the outside walls of the University of Denver. Gliding, dancing, flying with style – the members of BANDALOOP seamlessly weave dynamic physicality with intricate choreography and climbing technology to turn the dance floor on its side.                         
  • Capitol Comedy – October 17 7:30pm – A winning formula of musical comedy, political satire and multimedia animation that engages audiences with their hilarious, insightful and non-partisan performances.
  • Winnie the Pooh – November 11-13 (various times) – Winnie the Pooh and friends come to the stage with stunning life-sized puppetry in a beautifully crafted musical stage adaption produced by Disney.
  • The Swingles – December 12 7:30pm – Five-time Grammy winning a cappella group The Swingles bring their trademark vocal dexterity to the Newman Center for an evening of holiday classics.
  • Manual Cinema presents: Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster – January 18 2pm – Multi-media artists Manual Cinema put their mind-bending projection, DIY cinema, music and immersive sound to the adaption of the beloved children books by Mo Willems.
  • Friends! The Musical Parody – February 4 2pm & 7:30pm – Lovingly lampooning TV’s “Friends,” celebrate the misadventures of your favorite group of 20-somethings as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life and love in Manhattan.
