Vieux Farka Touré
World-renowned musician Vieux Farka Touré is often referred to as “the Hendrix of the Sahara,” and has become a cultural ambassador for the people of Mali and the Sahel. His 2022 collaboration with Khruangbin, “Ali,” pays tribute to his father (legendary guitar player Ali Farka Touré), receiving international acclaim. Touré’s live performances are highly energized, dazzling crowds with his charisma and talent.
By the time Touré’s self-titled second album had come out in 2009, Vieux was presenting a sound that was true to his own art, while sharing some of the roots of his father’s music such as elements of rock, Latin music, and other African influences. In 2010, Touré was performing at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Successful albums and tours have since followed. The year 2022 saw the release of two albums, starting with “Les Racines,” a return to the deep roots of the Desert Blues music that his father introduced to the world. This was followed by the long-awaited collaboration between Vieux and Houston-based psych-rock superstars Khruangbin. The album “Air” was an instant hit around the globe, earning the praise of Sir Elton John, who called it “one of the albums of the year… absolutely wonderful music.” With each new project, Vieux broadens his horizons, embracing new challenges and further building his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians.
