Our Venues

Over the past 20 years, the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts has quickly become known as one of the region's finest performing arts centers. The complex includes four performance and four reception spaces, in addition to classrooms and office space for the Lamont School of Music.

June Swaner Gates Concert Hall

June Swaner Gates Concert Hall is the venue's largest with 971 seats. With the atmosphere of an elegant European opera house, Gates Concert Hall has hosted such talents as Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Pat Metheny and Kronos Quartet.

Frederic C. Hamilton Family Recital Hall

The Frederic C. Hamilton Family Recital Hall holds 224 and is the home for many recital performances by faculty and students of the Lamont School of Music. The space boasts the William K. Coors tracker action organ, which was designed and built in Berlin.

Elizabeth Eriksen Byron Theatre

The Elizabeth Eriksen Byron Theatre holds 350 is the home for many performances by DU's Theatre Department. This versatile space has more than 40 different seating and stage configurations, perfect for live theatre and smaller dance performances.

Carol and Lisa Williams Recital Salon

The Carol and Lisa Williams Recital Salon holds 89 and hosts many recitals and master classes.

Joy Burns Plaza

Joy Burns Plaza is the main lobby for the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. It also functions as a striking space for standing or seated receptions. This elegant enclosed plaza features a high vaulted ceiling, transverse windows, Italian travertine marble floor, double columns, a regular rotation of DU's expansive art collection and custom-designed alabaster chandeliers and wood furniture.

Spencer Reception Room

Located just off the mezzanine right doors of the Gates Concert Hall and featuring windows overlooking the Rocky Mountains, the Spencer Reception Room is perfect for smaller, intimate receptions.

Instrumental Rehearsal Hall

The Instrumental Rehearsal Hall works well for a variety of events ranging from rehearsals to receptions. The space has a high ceiling, wooden floor and movable sound buffering curtains.

Carol L. Moore Vocal Arts Rehearsal Hall

The Carol L. Moore Vocal Arts Rehearsal Hall is smaller and similar in style to the Instrumental Rehearsal Hall with a high ceiling, wooden floor and movable sound buffering curtains.
